Colfax Area Heritage Museum

The museum is open daily, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Directions: Take the Colfax off-ramp from I-80 (approximately 50 miles East of Sacramento, California). Follow the signs into town. Go to the crossing of the railroad on Grass Valley Street at the center of downtown Historic Colfax (Main Street and Grass Valley Streets). The Museum is located in the refurbished Colfax Train Depot at 99 Railroad Avenue, where the statue of Schuyler Colfax is standing South Side of Grass Valley Street at the railroad crossing.

Archives Room — open by appointment on Tuesdays

The Archives Room is open to the public by appointment, each Tuesday from 9 a.m.–12 noon. To schedule an appointment, please call the Colfax Area Historical Museum before your visit, at (530) 346-8599.

Directions: The Archives Room is located at 55 School Street, Colfax, CA. Take the Colfax off-ramp from I-80 (approximately 50 miles east of Sacramento, California). Follow the signs into town. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right on North Main Street. Go two blocks to School Street on your left, to 55 School Street, where Sierra Vista Community Center houses the Colfax Area Historical Society archives.

From Grass Valley, turn off Highway 174 from Grass Valley onto North Main Street, in Colfax, and go two blocks to School Street on your right.

The CAHS archive room contains:

Physical Items

  • Collection of Chinese ceramics and baskets

  • Period clothing from 1800 to 1940

  • WWII memorabilia: Uniforms, helmet, shells, and an album with pictures of Camp Placer

Indexed News/Books

  • Books and other literature for historical reference

  • Cemetery records from 1851 to 1984

  • Back copies of Cobblestones in Colfax Library

Grace Hubley Jones Photographic Collection

  • 10,000 glass plate negatives from the early 1900's

Maps, Photos, Sketches

  • Maps & pictures from 1870 to 1999 of Colfax area and many of the railroads

  • Pictures of bridges and books on the North Fork of the American River
